TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A large nest of venomous bald-faced hornets that had been concerning Bartley Street residents for weeks has finally been taken down thanks to a local pest control business.
Residents told 13 Action News earlier this week that they reached out to the city to try to get the nest removed, but did not have any luck.
The people of the neighborhood then tried to collect a fund to remove the nest themselves, but were unsuccessful.
That is when Jacob Oberle, owner of local pest control company, EcoPest Solutions, stepped in and took care of the issue for free.
He said the nest had as many as 1,500 hornets living in it.
“I saw 13 ABC make a post about it, saying that they were struggling to get anybody out there to get it taken care of and the community has done so much for me. You know, when I get an opportunity to help out, especially in a situation like this, I’m just happy to be able to come out and help,” said Oberle.
Oberle told 13 Action News that he has seen an uptick in hornets nests this year.
Oberle believes the presence of the nest could be due to the mild winter of last year, along with recent drought conditions. He says these hornets thrive in the heat.
“With the lack of rain, they’ve got more time to build and the heat, they’re more active. And, you know, as we get later in the year, Buthey start to build very, very quickly,” said Oberle.
Oberle expects all of the hornets to be gone by Sunday.
