PADUCAH — The McCracken County Public Library is bringing attention to controversial books in what it calls a “stand against censorship” during Banned Book Week from Sept. 22 to 28.
Banned Book Week is often, but not always, held the last week of September, according to the library. The goal of Banned Book Week is to challenge censorship of free speech and to celebrate free access to information.
The library will spotlight books often found on the American Library Association‘s list of targeted books and will include some of the overall most censored books from the last century.
Books featured at the library will include “1984” by George Orwell, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, and “Gone With The Wind” by Margaret Mitchell, along with 19 other titles handpicked by McCracken County Public Library staff.
More than 4,000 book titles were targeted for removal from schools and libraries in 2023, up 65% from 2022, according to the library.
