Netflix has had a pretty good run with both original movies and the ones it has scooped up through licensing lately, and that trend continues with a new horror movie that has arrived at #2 on the charts for its debut.
That would be Evil Dead Rise, what is the fifth film in the series which also includes a TV show that spanned three seasons, but is arguably one of its best entries, despite showing up so late in the game.
There are of course the original three, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darknesse. There was a remake of sorts in 2013 just called Evil Dead. The Ash vs. Evil Dead series starring Bruce Campbell ran for three seasons and 30 episodes most recently from 2015 to 2018. Now, the latest entry is Evil Dead Rise which is now on Netflix for everyone to watch.
The film reviewed very well, an 84% from 238 critics and a solid 76% from audiences. It takes place mainly inside a single apartment where the demonic possession affects a women who pursues her own family members relentlessly and violently. I don’t think it stars anyone you know, actresses like Alyssa Sutherland, Mirabai Pease and Lily Sullivan lead. It’s directed by Lee Cronin who is behind a few different horror films, but this is his most high-profile project, and arguably his best. Now he’s got two unnamed horror movies coming up after how well this went. Here’s the official synopsis of Evil Dead Rise:
“In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.”
This movie was a big hit. It made $147 million globally with an estimated budget between $15-20 million. Again, it had non-A list actors and a very tiny filming location. I’m guessing the budget went to makeup and prosthetics and some VFX, probably. And that is all excellent, as you’ll see.
There are reportedly two more Evil Dead movies in the works, two spin-offs, neither involving Lee Cronin, it seems. I absolutely recommend Evil Dead Rise to all horror fans, especially fans of the OG series.
