A villager was left flummoxed by an advert for “Film Night” at his local church – which stated the movie’s title couldn’t be named due to licensing legislation.
It prompted him to share a snap to Reddit of the poster for the event, which takes place at St Mary’s Church hall in Appledore in Devon on Friday (September 27). In a bid to help residents figure out what they’d be watching, however, planners offered a cryptic clue as to its name with a three-word teaser.
“Two questions,” the villager began in the CasualUK subreddit. “1. Why can’t they advertise the title of the film? [something that appeared to be answered within the text]. And 2. What is the title of the film?”
As well as watching the mystery flick, residents who part with £5 can also take part in fundraising activities according to the poster – with proceeds going to Children’s Hospice South West.
“Cryptic clue – 3 words – Female in precious metal,” the poster teased, explaining: “The conditions of our screening licence do not allow us to advertise the title of the film.”
It prompted a wide range of guesses, with one Reddit user suggesting: “Using my supreme filmological knowledge, I believe the answer is Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.” A second person queried: “The Iron Lady?”
A third confusingly suggested: “That three word cryptic clue had four words in it. Is that a clue? My money is on Goldfinger.” Others declared the clue to be obvious, meanwhile, with several Reddit users expressing belief that the film is Woman in Gold.
“Woman in Gold, a 2015 biographical film starring Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, and Charles Dance,” one person said. A second joked: “Woman in Gold. If they told you what it was you’d be even less likely to attend.”
“Got to be Woman In Gold? commented a third person. “Wasn’t that popular but Helen Mirren was good and Ryan Reynolds plays a straight character (as in, not a comedy role).”
