A historian’s latest self-published book will take readers on a nostalgic journey with a mixture of interesting stories about a Suffolk town.
Martyn Taylor, 74, has collated a medley of articles which have been published in the Bury Free Press with other stories that haven’t been read before, to form his 12th and latest release Bury St Edmunds, a compilation.
The well-known historian, who lives in Bury, had 120 different subjects he could have included and managed to narrow it down to 70 for his 96-page book which was released on October 3.
Martyn, chairman of the Bury Society and a Bury Tour Guide, said: “This town has got a real and wonderful heritage of history.
“You don’t need to be a resident to like this book because there’s so much on offer and it will make a good Christmas present.
“I’ve been writing these articles about Bury for more than 20 years and people have been saying to me that they really like and enjoy them.
“This book has just been about creating something with all of them together in one place and I have very much enjoyed the process of doing that.”
Martyn’s book introduces a range of lives and locations relating to Bury from two devilish-looking Imps on the former Boots building to Greene King Royal Doulton plaques and the cattle market.
“With some of my other books, I was constrained by the subject matter, but with this I had a lot more freedom,” Martyn said.
“Cutting down the number of subjects took a lot of time but I liked taking the time to do that.
“Some of the stories are quite poignant and there are some quite funny ones in there too.
“I want to thank Premier Printers as they did a very good job too so I am grateful to them and I want to thank my wonderful wife Sandie for her support and any other contributors that helped at all.”
Signings for the book will be at Waterstones in the Buttermarket at 10am on October 26 and at the St Edmundsbury Cathedral shop at 10.15am on November 2.
Bury St Edmunds, a compilation costs £11.95 and will be for sale at Waterstones, the Cathedral shop, and through the Apex information point.
