Taylor Swift fans are split on how to feel about Lifetime’s upcoming holiday movie Christmas in the Spotlight, with some going as far as accusing the creators of using the singer’s love story ‘for clout’.
The film is painstakingly similar to Taylor’s relationship with Travis Kelce and follows popular musician Bowyn, who despite always singing about love, hasn’t found Mr. Right yet – until she meets football star Drew.
Lifetime shared a first look picture on Tuesday night ahead of the romcom’s release next month, showing leading stars Jessica Lord and Laith Wallschleger looking head over heels as they gaze into each others eyes.
And naturally, the image sparked a wave of reaction online with some stating they had ‘secondhand embarrassment’ while others declared they’ll have to watch the film ‘seven times’.
‘Her fame and busy recording schedule make it nearly impossible to date, but when she meets Drew, a pro football player, backstage at her show with his niece, there’s an undeniable spark between the two of them,’ the synopsis teases.
‘When Drew publicly declares he has a crush on Bowyn, they decide to give dating a shot, much to the excitement of her manager Mira (Jeannie Mai).
‘With each passing day they spend together, their feelings grow stronger… but can it last in the limelight, especially when they both have such hectic schedules?’
The synopsis continues: ‘With people questioning if their feelings for each other are real or just for show, the pressure mounts from the press, paparazzi, their fans and even their family, including Drew’s sister-in-law, Nicole (Haley Kalil).
‘The pair has until the end of the holiday season to decide if they want to stay together, or let it go down in flames.’
It’s fair to say that Taylor and Travis supporters are bitterly divided by the upcoming romcom, with some believing Lifetime is cashing in on their love story.
Taking to X, one said: ‘This is so weird to do, once again Taylor’s name is used for clout.’
Another posted: ‘Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does.’
A third said: ‘Y’all realize no actual fans are going to watch right.’
‘Another company using them to make [money bag emoji],’ commented a fourth.
A fifth declared: ‘We won’t be watching, it’s weird.’
Another blasted: ‘No swiftie has asked for this.’
But not everyone was against the film, with one writing: ‘Damnit I think I am going to have to break my streak of never watching a single Hallmark/Lifetime/whatever Christmas romance.’
Another said: ‘I’m not a big TV Christmas movie person I kind of find them a bit cringe at times but this one I can’t wait to watch of course.’
Taylor’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis has taken the world by storm.
The Karma singer, 34, and the athlete, 34, first sparked dating rumors in September 2023, after she attended a number of his games.
The pair went public with their relationship in October 2023, when they stepped out holding hands at a Saturday Night Live afterparty.
They cemented their love in January with an amorous display after the Chiefs secured their place at the Super Bowl, with Kelce heard saying ‘I love you’ to his pop star girlfriend for the first time.
Christmas in the Spotlight is slated to premiere November 23 at 8pm.
Laith, who plays Drew in the movie, has appeared to have found his niche playing tight ends.
The 32-year-old star, who is a former professional football player, recently played Rob Gronkowski in the 10-part FX series American Sports Story.
Meanwhile British actress Jessica, 26, is known for her roles in the television shows The Next Step and Hulu’s Find Me in Paris.
