CORNING, Ark. (KAIT) – The Corning School District wants to get more books into kids’ hands. To do that, they’re putting books on wheels.
Corning unveiled its new book bus to students this week. The goal of the bus is to make reading more accessible for kids living in rural areas who may not have access to a library.
Heather Clifton, the district reading specialist for the Corning School District, said some of the students don’t have access to the internet. The bus gives them the opportunity to provide resources to the students and their families.
The book bus was made possible through the Arkansas Successful Outcomes for Arkansas Readers (SOAR) Grant. Clifton wants to take the book bus to communities throughout the district and set up events in the area.
“We are still building our calendar, but our first stop is the Boo Bash in Corning,” Clifton said.
During the summer, the Corning School District offers meals to students in need, but not all of the kids have immediate access. Clifton hopes the bus will help with that.
“We’re going to use our book bus to provide those meals this summer and go to the communities where kids live,” Clifton said.
There is also a parent station on the bus where parents can go online and check their child’s grades.
