This weekend catch concerts with Palo Alto-raised star Remi Wolf, New Wave rockers Modern English, folk-pop singer-songwriter Melinda Kausek, The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol and Borromeo String Quartet; see a unique flamenco show bringing together top artists from Spain and celebrate the book arts — and make books — at the Book Arts Bazaar.
Remi Wolf
Funky pop singer-songwriter Remi Wolf grew up in Palo Alto and was making a name for herself on the local music scene even back when she was a Paly student. Since then, she’s hit the big time, performing at festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. Her sophomore album, “Big Ideas” (following 2021’s LP “Juno”), came out in July, featuring the exuberant single “Cinderella.” Wolf comes back to the Peninsula to play at Stanford’s Frost Amphitheater as part of her “Big Ideas” tour, along with slimdan.
Oct. 18, 7 p.m., Frost Amphitheater, 351 Lasuen St., Stanford; $68.91; stanford.edu/events/2024-frost/remi-wolf/.
Melinda Kausek
Local folk-pop singer-songwriter Melinda Kausek, whose website describes her sound as “dreamy, haunting, sometimes sassy original music,” will perform a double set at Little Green – A Plant Bar along with her full backing band (TK Tran on guitar, Sam Feinstein on double bass, Hansel Von Muller on drums) and a few special guests. Kausek wrote on Instagram that she was planning to “lean into the spooky season” with some “haunting banjolele numbers (and maybe a few murder ballads).”

Modern English
The future’s open wide this Friday at The Guild Theatre, with New Wave/post punk band Modern English. Best known for the ’80s classic “I Melt With You,” the group weathered several break-ups somewhat early in its history, but according to the band’s website, Modern English has kept the same core lineup since 1977, with vocalist Robbie Grey, guitarist Gary McDowell, bassist Mick Conroy and keyboardist Stephen Walker. Their latest album, “1 2 3 4,” released earlier this year, leans into punk-edged roots and retains the band’s foundation of high-energy, guitar-driven songs that seamlessly blend in synths and soaring vocals — with lyrics that take on both the political and personal. Opening the show is singer-songwriter Alain Whyte, who draws on elements of rock, pop and rockabilly, and has had a longtime co-writing partnership with Morrissey.
Oct. 18, 8 p.m., at The Guild Theatre, 949 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, $40.56-$92.70. guildtheatre.com.
The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol featuring Talib Kweli
Longtime Bay Area vocalist and educator The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol uses music to trace the four centuries-long story of Black people in America in “Blues, Baroque & Bars,” which weaves blues, jazz, classical, hip-hop, funk, R&B, and gospel “to tell stories of triumph, sadness, romance, injustice, protest, humor and resilience,” according to Stanford Live. In addition to Carol’s vocals, the performance includes rapper Talib Kweli, drummer Dennis Chambers and a baroque string quartet, with music by Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Marvin Gaye and more.
Oct. 20, 2:30 p.m., Bing Concert Hall, 327 Lasuen St., Stanford; $15-$84; live.stanford.edu.

In addition to championing works by contemporary classical composers, the ensemble is known for its fresh interpretations of works in the classical canon. The quartet will perform works by J.S. Bach, Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga, Beethoven and Sibelius for their concert at Kohl Mansion. A day before their concert at Kohl, the quartet swings by Palo Alto for a short concert presented in partnership with the Palo Alto Library.
