ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – The Rockingham County School Board has voted to permanently removed two more books from school libraries and classrooms.
‘Looking For Alaska,’ by John Green and ‘Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson will be permanently removed due to what the board deemed sexually explicit content. In January of 2024, the school board temporarily removed a list of over 50 books based on parent complaints of “sexually explicit content, explicit language and violence.”
Since then, the board has been voting on individual titles, deciding whether to permanently remove them or put them back in schools.
”I move to follow the superintendent’s recommendation to remove ‘Looking for Alaska by John green as it contains sexually explicit content,” Board Member Hollie Cave said.
School Board Chair Matt Cross supported Cave’s recommendation.
“The motion passes; that’s our ending of our action items tonight,” Cross said.
‘Looking For Alaska’ was removed in a unanimous vote, while ‘Allegedly’ was removed in a four-to-one vote. Jackie Lohr was the only board member to vote ‘no’ to the book’s removal.
