The Canary Islands are extremely popular with Brits – particularly those looking for year round sun. But as a result some of the main resorts are becoming overcrowded and packed out.
For those tourists who prefer a quieter atmosphere then the once tiny fishing village of Tarajalejo on the island of Fuerteventura could be a new top pick.
One of the little coastal spot’s most streaming features is its black sands which contrast with its crystal clear, shimmering waters.
The cute town square still has a traditional Spanish vibe where residents come together to enjoy key dates in the calendar. And those who enjoy eating out and a holiday tipple needn’t worry as there’s a great range of outlets. Holiday experts at travel company Sunshine.co.uk explained more.
The website said: “Once a small fishing village, now becoming a more developed and popular resort with over a kilometre of black sand beach.
“There is a town square where locals meet to celebrate fiestas, along with enjoying the restaurants and bars in the old part of the resort. It is home to a kilometre long black sand beach.
“There is also a harbour to sit and watch the fishermen which lies beneath the peninsula to the east of the resort. Fuerteventura Airport is approx 50 km from Tarajalego.”
Its stunning beach stretches for 1400 metres in length and spans 45 metres in width. Becasue the waters are calm and clear, it’s perfect for swimming or playing with children.
As well as relaxing, thrillseekers can enjoy windsurfing, diving and kayaking. There are also an array of trekking trails and places to enjoy horseback rides on offer. Maritime Avenue in the resort has also recently had a makeover and is packed with sculptures.
Those who have visited the destination have plenty to say – taking to travel review website Tripadvisor to say what they loved about it.
One said: “Situated on the south coast this is a growing seafront resort with a nice promenade, a few hotels plus town centre with some shops and bars. The beach is black sand but looked calm and peaceful. Had a nice walk around.”
Another said: “Been to Fuerteventura many times but never visited this resort.”
They added: “If you are looking for a very quiet relaxing break I couldn’t recommend it more.
“The beach is beautiful, black volcanic sand, very fine and soft (and hot) with a few bigger pebbles scattered about. Sea is lovely to swim in.”
