OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) – As we inch closer to Halloween, many are turning to scary movies to celebrate the season. If that includes you, you may want to consider a new scary movie set right here in the Tri-State.
“New Fears Eve” was written, directed, and produced by two Owensboro natives; and they’re showing it at festivals around the country.
They say the movie wouldn’t have been possible without the support, and talent, of the people in the area.
“New Fears Eve” is a horror comedy which tells the story of a serial killer going on a rampage on New Year’s Eve.
The movie is set and was shot in Owensboro by a pair of Owensboro natives.
Eric Huskisson and P.J. Starks make up Blood Moon Pictures; and they wrote, directed, and produced the movie.
“It’s really fun to sit and watch this movie with an audience and see people cringing and gasping and groaning,” said Starks. “But then equally when a joke lands and it hits, and the entire audience, an entire room erupts into laughter, that’s when you’re just like, ‘Yes, we got ‘em.’”
They say they shot the movie at recognizable places like The Pub on Second, the Riverpark Center, and they even shot office-building scenes at a local realty office.
They also got the help of the OPD to block off streets when they shot outside.
They say the movie was only possible thanks to all the talented people already in the area.
“A lot of people that are talented in different areas, whether it be acting, behind the scenes, behind the camera, special effects and all that,” said Huskisson. “They didn’t run off to California or New York. A lot of them are around this area, so you just find them, you network, and you become friends with them, and you can do it all right here.”
They say the movie premiered in June at the Riverpark Center, and it got an even better turnout than they’d hoped for.
Since then, it’s been showing at festivals around the country, and was even nominated for an award from the horror-movie magazine “Fangoria.”
The duo says they love their hometown, and they’re eager to feature it.
“When I write the script, I’m proud that I’m from Owensboro,” said Starks. “I love living here, I have a great time living here, so that’s why I inject so much Owensboro into the scripts. So any of these movies that we’ve done, they’re steeped in Owensboro and Daviess County.”
