THE Sunshine Central Mall in Bandar Baru Air Itam, Penang, has officially opened its doors for business.
Sunshine Central, the largest shopping mall on Penang Island, offers a wide array of shopping, dining and entertainment options.
The soft opening of its first phase, including the hypermarket, was officiated by Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who lauded the project as a major contribution to the state’s growing retail and tourism sector.
He applauded the Sunshine brand in his speech for its evolution from a humble mini-market to a lifestyle hub that now comprises multiple shopping complexes across Penang.
“Sunshine’s journey began in Pekan Air Itam near the market as a modest Sui Wah mini-market, serving the local community with dedication and care.
“Today, with the opening of Sunshine Central, we see a brand that has not only grown but also embraced the changing needs of the community, particularly in areas like Bandar Baru Air Itam, Paya Terubong, and even Balik Pulau,” he said.
Sunshine Central, he added, is important to Penang’s overall development and economy as it is not only about expanding retail options, it also enhances the lives of Penangites by offering them a place to come together, shop, dine, and be entertained.
“It is more than just another shopping mall, it is actually a comprehensive lifestyle destination for the surrounding community.
“The mall houses 350 stores, including the Sunshine Hypermarket, which offers an all-in-one shopping experience for everyday needs.”
Wong said Sunshine Central would be hosting several events in the near future, including a Deepavali celebration next week, showcasing the vibrant traditions of Penang’s diverse communities.
The driving force behind Sunshine Central is Crimson Omega Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Cynthia Hwang.
In her welcoming address, she expressed her pride and joy at the completion of Phase 1 of the project, acknowledging the efforts of her team, partners, and tenants.
She also paid tribute to her father Datuk Hwang Thean Long, the managing director of Suiwah Corporation Bhd, whose vision for growth was instrumental in the development of the Sunshine brand.
“Sunshine Central is a reflection of our resilience and commitment to innovation, as over the years, we’ve faced numerous challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, but each obstacle has only made us stronger.
“Today, we stand here, ready to offer Penangites a place that represents more than just retail – it’s a community space where families, friends, and individuals can come together,” she said.
Cynthia also thanked the many partners and brands that had joined Sunshine Central, ensuring the mall’s success.
She added that customers would be able to shop for local and international fashion brands and watch movies.
“Beyond shopping and entertainment, Sunshine Central also has a food hall, a fitness centre and an amusement centre, ensuring there is something for everyone.
“The mall aims to serve as a retail hub and a social and cultural centre,” she added.
The opening ceremony was filled with entertainment and activities.
The day began with a dramatic War Drum performance to welcome guests, followed by speeches from Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony officially marked the mall’s opening.
Time Internet presented a plaque certifying the mall as 5G-ready.
The celebration continued with dances including a special performance by Athens Fitness, fashion shows, a talk on essential oil, and a meet-and-greet session with local influencer Jing Jing.
In a symbolic gesture, 3,000 balloons filled with shopping vouchers were released.
