Disney+ has delighted fans with a trailer for the eagerly-awaited second season of Goosebumps, packed with fresh nods to the spine-chilling R. L Stine book series.
Drawing inspiration from the best-selling horror novels, Goosebumps first aired in October 2023 and centred around five teenagers who inadvertently unleash a supernatural entity into their home town and are tasked with forcing it back into confinement.
Their adventure led them to unearth dark secrets about their parents’ history. The ten-episode series received mixed reviews but secured a favourable 74% critics rating and 69% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After its release, Disney confirmed that the mystery drama would return with a new cast and storyline. Friends star David Schwimmer heads up the team as former botany lecturer and divorced father, Anthony.
The new chapter, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, follows twin siblings (portrayed by Sam McCarthy and Jayden Bartels), who spend the summer with their father and stumble upon “a threat stirring, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery”, reports the Mirror.
The series synopsis goes on to say: “As they delve into the unknown, the duo find themselves entangled in the chilling tale of four teenagers who mysteriously disappeared in 1994.”
Released on October 20, the official trailer has already racked up 3.6million views on YouTube and sharp-eyed fans have identified the books that the season draws inspiration from.
Stay Out of the Basement
Schwimmer’s character directly alludes to the book in the preview, telling his children: “I have one rule, stay out of the basement.”
Released in 1992, Stay Out of the Basement centres on a botanist conducting experiments in his cellar. His kids decide to check on his work only to witness their father bleeding and shouting ‘stay out of the basement.’
Doubts about their dad’s projects arise, leading them to delve into his potentially dangerous plant experiments.
The Blob That Ate Everyone
Evoking Stein’s 1997 novel is the creature seen in the trailer, akin to The Blob That Ate Everyone.
This eerie story follows Zackie Beauchamp, an ambitious young horror writer who procures an antique typewriter. Once he starts crafting his terrifying tale, Zackie discovers that his written words manifest into actual events, setting off an unsettling sequence of occurrences.
Monster Blood
Eagle-eyed enthusiasts observed that the beast in the preview bears resemblance to the Monster Blood entity. In this 1992 novel, twelve year old Evan acquires a container of Monster Blood from a quaint toy store.
At first, it’s all fun and games, but soon the monster comes alive and grows uncontrollably.
The Haunted Car
An erratic vehicle fleetingly appears in the trailer, where someone exclaims: “I’m not controlling the car.”
Echoing the 1999 narrative The Haunted Car, the story unfolds around a motoring buff who snaps up a new ride from a nearby dealer, only to discover that the car has a will of its own.
Readers have been quick to express their excitement for the upcoming season, with many praising its inclusion of various beloved titles. One viewer commented on the trailer: “Thank you for meeting the OG Goosebumps fans as adults.”
Another fan couldn’t hide their enthusiasm, saying: “Now THIS is what I call Goosebumps. I love it that so many different books are referenced in [this].
“Goosebumps is finally getting the spotlight it deserves in this era. I hope these newer horror fans love Goosebumps as much as we 90s kids do. Viewer Beware! You’re in for such a SCARE!”. A third added their voice to the chorus of approval, writing: “This is the moment we have all been waiting for.”
