Among actions at the DeKalb County Board of Education’s regularly scheduled October meeting there was good news for children not yet enrolled in county schools.
Superintendent Wayne Lyles announced that the school system entered into a partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to put books in the hands of pre-schoolers in DeKalb County, at no cost to their families.
The Imagination Library will send one best-selling children’s book a month to families who sign up for the program. Lyles said the school system will help with postage. “We’ll be out about $1.15 per book,” he said, adding that the governor’s office has agreed to pay postage for the first two years.
Another measure to provide help to the families of DeKalb County children was approved – a service agreement with Youth Advocate Programs Inc. Lyles said the grant-funded agreement will provide assistance to families with discipline, truancy, or other issues in the home.
The board also approved member Monty Darwin’s recommendation to increase the CSFO supplement to $1,250 per month. The increase raises the supplement by $1,000, from $250 per month to Anthony Cooper, Chief School Financial Officer, effective Oct. 1.
An agreement with Schneider Election was extended because delays obtaining equipment prevented completion of the project. The board also approved an Investment Grade Audit Agreement with Schneider Electric, and a letter of intent and a letter of agreement with Schneider for an electric design agreement.
The board approved a bid from Boatner Construction Company for exercise science classrooms and a fieldhouse at Plainview High School, and a cleaning bid that adds the Student Services Annex (the CableTime building).
At Lyles recommendation, the board approved removing some unused categories — Elementary/Junior High CNP Managers and Elementary/Jr High/Middle School Custodians – from the salary schedules to “clean up” the schedule.
