The Paintsville Tourism Commission approved one funding request during its regular meeting Oct. 21.
Commission members voted to give up to $5,000 to the City Between the Lakes Christmas Classic, an annual basketball tournament held in December and sponsored jointly by Paintsville and Johnson Central high schools.
The money will cover the costs of 45 hotel rooms for out-of-town teams playing in the tournament. Tourism Executive Director Jeremiah Parsons said he would negotiate the price of the hotel rooms.
In his monthly report to the commission, Parsons said “a ton’ of events will be held in Paintsville to celebrate Halloween, including Trunk or Treat on Oct. 26 in the downtown parking lot.
The Mountain HomePlace will sponsor its last Pumpkin Patch on Friday, Oct. 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities will include pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, train rides, hay rides and laser tag.
The price is $5 per person, and concessions will be sold separately.
Also on Oct. 25-26 will be the Haunted Museum at the Van Lear Historical Society’s Coal Miners Museum and Meade Asylum at the old Meade Memorial Elementary School on Ky. 40 at Williamsport.
The Stafford House in Paintsville will conduct its final paranormal investigations Oct. 25-26, with doors opening at 8:15 p.m. for orientation and the investigation from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Participants must be at least 17 years old. The cost is $25 per person, with equipment provided.
More than 400 children are expected to Trick or Treat in downtown Paintsville on Halloween, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., according to Parsons.
Halloween with Heroes will also be held Oct. 31 in the city parking lot in downtown Paintsville from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31. The event will feature police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel giving out candy to children.
Parsons told commission members that events are already being planned for Christmas, with the official opening of the season scheduled Dec. 7 with activities all day along with a tree lighting and a parade in the evening. The theme for the event is “Country Stars and Christmas Lights,” Parsons said.
