A book written by Niuean children for Niuean children was launched at the Niue Primary School last week Tuesday.
The book was written by about 40 Niuean children on the island and abroad from as far as Japan, Canada and Norway.
Author David Riley said the project was about getting children to write about their history, culture, art of Niue and experiences in their own words with the help of their families. He said there is not a lot of books out there that are written by children.
“This is the first book in a series, there will be one for Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Fiji but Niue is first to celebrate your 50th,” Riley said.
Project Lead in Niue and former teacher -Mele Nemaia thanked the team for allowing her to be part of the project and learning a lot from the children.
“I feel so proud and so honored to see that book written by the children for the children in how they see the world and how they see Niue their own personal experiences with their family, their own food, the culture, there’s a lot.” said Nemaia.
A group from the Favona Primary School in Auckland that included teachers and parents were also in attendance during the launch.
Niue Primary School Principal-Carl Edwards said she was grateful for the exchange of knowledge during the schools tour to Auckland this year.
