Paul Warne says planning for the January transfer window at Derby County is under way, but admits players will have to leave before any can arrive.
Recruitment meetings are currently taking place as Derby plot what business they may do when the market opens in the New Year. A striker had been on the wanted list, but a long-term injury to Ryan Nyambe may also alter Derby’s thinking.
However, the club has reached the 25-man squad limit and has a full complement of loans. Warne said for any player to arrive, there would need to be some movement going out.
“We have recruitment meetings each week and we currently have a full squad and full echelon of loans. Any business we will do to improve the team, there has to be players that leave. I honestly think the January window will be quiet, you’ll be disappointed to know,” he said.
“I spoke to an agent yesterday and he said the same thing. Most playing squads in the Championship and below are at their max. There will be a lot of wheeling and dealing.
“You can quote me, but I don’t think you will see much happening early January. I think it will be lastminute.com. As always there are certain parts of our play that I really like, but I still think we should possibly produce better chances in the final third.
“There are a lot of good things. But if everyone was fit and I didn’t get anybody new in, I would deal with that. However with every manager at every club, if you can improve one facet of the team, you will look at it.
“That’s what we are doing now. Ryan Nyambe is out for a long time, which is disappointing, and hopefully, we can get the game time out of Kane Wilson and Joe Ward, and, as always, you use the window to best suit your purpose.”
