This past Saturday, Flyleaf Books held their first Puzzles and Pumpkins Party to ring in the Halloween spirit. Flyleaf — located on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. — is surrounded by colorful foliage, making it the perfect place to spend an October afternoon.
As the aroma of hot cider and fresh book pages filled the air of local bookstore Flyleaf Books, community members were ready to welcome the spooktacular week of Halloween with a day of festivities.
Customers of all ages were invited to participate in a scavenger hunt, dress up in costume, exchange games and puzzles and indulge in treats and hot apple cider. The day was organized by Jamie Kay, the children’s lead bookseller at Flyleaf.
Kay said that this is the first time Flyleaf has organized a scavenger hunt, and it was a lot of fun for customers and staff.
“I love watching the kids do the scavenger hunt,” Floor Manager Talia Smart, said.
Community members disguised as witches and black cats filled the store as they completed their hunts, which required customers to explore the store grounds in order to complete. All participants in costumes were offered a $3 store coupon.
The scavenger hunt consisted of 15 various tasks, from finding book titles and fall imagery to solving riddles and finding hidden pumpkins around the store. Those who completed it were eligible to enter a prize raffle.
Additionally, in the store’s event room, stacks of puzzles and board games were brought in by community members for Flyleaf’s “puzzle swap,” where customers could bring in their own games and take home another.
“We’re currently working on a scavenger hunt, and it’s a little more complicated than we imagined but we’re still having a lot of fun!” Kim Kuecker said on behalf of her daughter and husband, avid customers at Flyleaf.
