President of the United States
With our media partner the Los Angeles Times not publishing an endorsement for President of the United States, we believe it is our responsibility to do so. And the choice is obvious. Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate who is qualified to hold this office. She will uphold the U.S. Constitution and work to codify in the Constitution a woman’s right to an abortion. Harris has set forth a forward-looking platform that will support middle class tax cuts. The Harris-Walz administration will ensure the Affordable Care Act remains the law of the land, will work to lower prescription drug costs and strengthen health care for veterans.
Most importantly Harris will work to unite the American people, to focus on moving forward and not looking back. As she says in her stump speech, “Americans have so much more in common than what separates us.”
Her experience as a prosecutor, district attorney of California, United State Senator of California and Vice President of the United States makes her the only presidential candidate to have experience in many levels of government.
Conversely, convicted felon Donald Trump seeks retribution, sows hate and division, and is wholly unfit to serve. As president, he incited a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump said the Constitution of the United States should be terminated.
His plans to improve the economy are to give tax cuts to corporations and billionaires. He wants to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act and has “concepts of a plan” to replace it. His behavior demonstrates that he is unfit to be the leader of the greatest country in the world – one he denigrates and calls “the world’s trash can.”
Whether or not you agree with all of Harris’ policies, it is time to put country over party. We whole heartedly endorse Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz for president and vice president.
United State Senate
Adam Schiff has served as a Unites States Congressman for 12 years. He has consistently demonstrated he works to better our communities, the environment, championing workers’ rights, securing funding for infrastructure projects and holding those in power accountable. He withstood attacks from the former president and did not back down. He led the first House of Representatives impeachment of Donald Trump. As Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and member of the January 6th Committee, Schiff was on the front lines to preserve democracy, uphold the rule of law, and hold insurrectionists accountable. Schiff will continue to fight for California and is a proven public servant who get things done.
U.S House of Representatives 30th District
Laura Friedman has served in the California Assembly since 2016. In an interview with the Beverly Press, she laid out her plans and vision mapping the interconnectivity of transportation, clean energy and housing. Her holistic, common-sense approach to the problems facing local municipalities, state and country, she can chart a new way forward in Congress.
U.S House of Representatives 36th District
Ted Lieu is running for reelection and should retain his seat as a fighter for equality, cyber security and the environment. He is a strong advocate for active U.S. military personnel and for veterans. Lieu secured $35 million for safety improvements at the VA hospital in Westwood and authored legislation to provide housing for homeless veterans. He will continue to uphold democracy and serve with a keen focus and dignity.
Los Angeles County District Attorney
Nathan Hochman is running to unseat incumbent George Gascón for D.A. Hochman is originally from Beverly Hills and now lives in Brentwood. An extensive interview with Hochman is on page 6 of this issue. He calls himself a hard centrist and is running as an independent. Crime has gone up under Gascón, and some of his actions seem more for publicity and self-promotion than fighting crime. He had four years to make Los Angeles County safer. It is time to give Hochman an opportunity to achieve that goal. We endorse Nathan Hochman.
City of West Hollywood City Council
With nine candidates running to fill two open seats, the Beverly Press conducted extensive interviews with all the candidates. To read the profiles, visit our website and our past issues over the past four weeks. We are endorsing John Erickson and George Nickle. Erickson has made some controversial votes during his term on the City Council, however, he has also represented the city well, locally, nationally and abroad. Erickson also has robust knowledge of how to work with City Hall. He deserves a second term. Nickle, on the other hand, will provide a counterpoint to Erickson on the council, advocating for the city’s senior population, the disabled community and renters. As a West Hollywood public safety commissioner, he has City Hall experience.
Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education
The Beverly Press endorses incumbent candidate Dr. Amanda Stern for Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education based on her prior experience on the school board coupled with her expertise as a school psychologist. We are confident that Stern’s thorough understanding of childhood learning and development will help lead BHUSD students toward success as they navigate the challenges of post-pandemic education.
