Saturday evening, JBCF Business Solutions held a Cocktails by the River Community Appreciation Event. The event was to celebrate the upcoming launch of the new lifestyle blog website femexeclife.com. The blog is geared towards female executives and women with traditional values. For instance, a woman who owns a business, or is in a leadership role does not have to choose between work and family. She can do both. Marquita Downey of JBCF Business Solutions stated that “society has predetermined that women have to choose to work or attend to her family. Today, women can do both, and they should be celebrated for it.” Downey cited a Forbes article, which stated “nearly 40% of small businesses are women-owned. Women owned businesses are making incredible progress despite the issues against them. Different ethnicities and sexes face different problems. For instance, black women business owners have “less access to capital and technical assistance. Women also lack access to crucial federal programs like contracting and procurement programs.” (“The Economic Impact of Women-owned Businesses”, Forbes). Nonetheless, women are thriving as competitors in the business world.
Furthermore, Downey didn’t believe she was the only one who worked long hours while making three or four meals a week for her family. “I do work anywhere from 60 to 70 hours a week. I cook about 3 to 4 nights out of the week. I love to make homemade bread. I love to make homemade cookies.” She continued. “I love home decor and DIY projects. So, I’m like I know I can’t be the only one. So that’s why I started talking to colleagues and friends that all feel like this.”
Downey and her team launched a lifestyle blog that highlights aspects of working women at home and on the job. For example, the website offers quick and easy recipes to feed families, vlogs, content about the business world and home decor, small business issues that affect women, tax planning advantages, and tax issues. Downey has local partners like Jennifer Cannon at J. Christine, and Still Pond Vineyard and Winery in Arlington who understand and encourage her cause.
Additionally, many business owners and working women support Downey’s launch. Jamie Sinko, Director of Development, is excited about the website. “I’m very excited with everything Marquita is doing for the community and beyond. I’m looking forward to seeing everything that she has accomplished.I just think it’s awesome that we have women who do want to tackle the home and work balance.” The Chamber of Commerce members are also supportive of the launch and the positive benefits it will have on the community. The launch will happen on November 1.
