The hit indie video game Bendy and the Ink Machine is heading to the big screen, and the Official Bendy® has announced today that the movie adaptation has found its director in André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark).
Initially released in 2017 from developer Joey Drew Stories, Bendy and the Ink Machine “is the first person puzzle action horror game that will forever ruin your childhood love of cartoons.”
The premise of the game has it set in 1966, where an elderly animator named Henry, who upon an invitation from his old friend Joey Drew, returns to his old animation studio. Once there, Henry discovers that the studio has been overrun by nightmarish cartoon characters that have been created by the titular Ink Machine. As Henry navigates his former workplace, trying to put a stop to things, he will be forced to fight the characters based on his drawings, as well as avoiding Bendy, the studio’s mascot, who is intent on killing Henry.
Last month, franchise creator TheMeatly took to socials to tease that the movie adaptation will combine practical effects and CGI. He said, “Considering the complexity and fantasy of the #BENDY world, I’m aiming for a combination of both practical effects and cgi polish to pull it all together. We are working with creative people who tend to feel the same.”
Based on the announcement video, Øvredal is committed to creating a faithful adaptation. The filmmaker said, “I promise we’re going to make a really special movie, something that all the fans are going to love. Something that honours the fantastic characters, fun worlds, and everything we all love about the Bendy games.”
Our own Luiz H.C. listed Bendy and the Ink Machine as one of six horror games worthy of film adaptation, saying “It might be that ever-evolving cultural sensibilities end up giving a darker edge to things that were once deemed innocent, but you’ve got to admit that there’s something naturally unnerving about old-timey cartoons. This is precisely why Bendy and the Ink Machine would work so well as a movie, with its unique subject matter and aesthetic allowing for a cinematic adaptation unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.”
Sounds like the games’ fanbase will get their wish with an exciting new adaptation on the horizon.
