Cillian Murphy recently opened up about the time he found himself crying on the train while reading a book.
The Irish actor’s upcoming film Small Things Like These is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Claire Keegan. Some think Murphy could win his second Oscar for the role, just one year after he earned the coveted award for playing the titular character in Oppenheimer.
He shared in an interview with Jake’s Takes that he recently cried while reading another of Keegan’s books on a train. He was engrossed in her short story Foster.
“That book is so beautiful and so tender and so moving, and I was just kind of overcome,” Murphy explained.
He said luckily, it was winter time, so he had a big winter coat to hide his face from prying eyes. The star believes he went by unnoticed.
Murphy continued, talking of Keegan’s craft: “That’s the power of her writing. It’s the economy of her language, but also the sort of purity of her message.
“The narrative is that she can just knock you out… in such a brief book.”
His new movie is set to come out Nov. 8. It takes place amid the Magdalene Laundries in 1980s Ireland, where he plays Bill Furlong, a coal trader who has uncovered hidden abuses at a local convent.
The idea for the film was actually first suggested by his wife Yvonne McGuinness. He said the team was considering ideas for what film to make, when she threw out Keegan’s novel.
In another video on X, he said: ““It was actually my wife who said, ‘well what about Claire Keegan?’ And I had read the book, I think, but I didn’t realize the rights were available.”
