Border Patrol agents arrested 124 Iranian nationals crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in October, marking a significant increase ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In the final month before the 2024 presidential election, U.S. Border Patrol reported a spike in arrests, detaining approximately 58,000 migrants at the nation’s borders. Breitbart News reported. This figure, the highest since August, represents a significant uptick from the nearly 56,000 apprehensions recorded in September, according to the CBP Nationwide Encounters report.
Of the total apprehensions, nearly 57,000 occurred at the southwest U.S.-Mexico border. The San Diego Sector led with over 14,000 arrests in October, surpassing the 13,309 recorded in September. Tucson, El Paso, and Del Rio sectors followed, contributing significantly to the overall numbers.
Among these figures, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report indicated that 124 Iranian nationals were arrested after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. This represents a more than 150% increase from the previous year, when 50 Iranians were apprehended in October 2023. The influx of Iranian migrants and other Special Interest Aliens (SIA) is a growing concern, with a source within CBP stating that the trend shows no signs of slowing as the new fiscal year begins.
The source emphasized the security implications of these apprehensions, noting the ongoing threat posed by Iranian operatives. The increase in Iranian SIAs is particularly troubling given Iran’s history of threats against former President Donald Trump. The Trump administration’s 2020 drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani has been a flashpoint for continued hostilities. According to an AP News report, intelligence officials recently briefed Trump’s campaign on existing Iranian threats, which are part of a pattern of previously reported plots.
A DHS fact sheet defines Special Interest Aliens as individuals whose travel and behavior may indicate potential national security risks. While the term does not automatically label an individual as a terrorist, it flags those with travel patterns or connections that warrant closer scrutiny.
The source highlighted that most of the Iranian nationals arrested are released into the U.S. to pursue asylum claims. This practice has been met with concern from Border Patrol officials, who fear that individuals with harmful intent could exploit the system. “Our fear is that those who pose the most danger are using this group to blend in and will ultimately harm Americans,” the source stated.
Reports indicate that these individuals are also permitted to board domestic flights within the United States, raising additional security concerns. The situation underscores ongoing challenges in managing border security amid complex international threats and heightened migration patterns ahead of key political milestones.
