Recently appointed Tourism Ambassador, Julien Alfred accompanied a tourism delegation to the United Kingdom to meet with members of the British Parliament.
Addressing a meeting of top tourism and travel officials, Alfred, who made her first official appearance as Saint Lucia’s tourism ambassador, encouraged further cooperation between the UK and Saint Lucia. Alfred highlighted the mutual goals achieved by both Saint Lucia and the UK as part of continued partnerships. “This relationship has contributed greatly to our shared goals, our culture, and our people,” she said.
Alfred also discussed the challenges the island faces as climate change worsens which undermines much of the country’s infrastructure. “However, like many nations, we face pressing challenges. Among them, the impact of climate change. Our nation is vulnerable for rising sea levels and extreme weather, which threaten our environment and our way of life,” she noted.
Education and healthcare were also pressing issues highlighted by the double Olympic medallist in her address to the UK MPs. “We also have issues related to health care and education. Our people deserve robust health services and quality education, which are fundamental to a thriving society.”
The Tourism Ambassador also used her community experiences as an appeal for increased British aid in Saint Lucia. “I come from a community where young men and women are eager to contribute, yet many find employment opportunities that match their skills and ambitions. They have the potential and the drive but often lack the resources to fully realize them. This is why investment in education, vocational training, and economic development is crucial for Saint Lucia’s future.” she said.
Saint Lucia continues to enjoy good relations with the United Kingdom, maintaining VISA-free travel to the country for decades.
