Tom Hanks is known for his nice guy persona, but don’t get on his bad side. The actor has a variety of beloved films, from the Polar Express to Forrest Gump to Saving Private Ryan. A recent film that’s left Netflix viewers bawling is A Man Called Otto, which is leaving the streamer in November.
The Oscar winner recently sat down with Conan O’Brien on his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, where he discussed some of the negative reviews for his latest movie, Here.
Hanks reunites with Forrest Gump costar Robin Wright for the film. It takes place throughout generations all in the same spot, from the origins of humanity to the lives of couple Richard and Margaret Young.
Here received mostly negative reviews, with a score of 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. While talking about the negative reviews, O’Brien brought up that sometimes films initially receive bad reviews, but are then made into cult classics.
That happened with his 1996 film That Thing You Do!, which originally saw disappointing reaction but is now looked on more fondly.
Hanks responded: “Let me tell you something about these —-suckers who write about movies… Can I say that?

“Somebody who wrote about it is, ‘Tom Hanks has to stop hanging around with veterans of TV, because this is just like the shot on TV and it’s not much of anything.
“That same person then wrote about the cult classic ‘That Thing You Do!’ Same exact person. They said, ‘All you need is 20 years between now and then, and it ends up speaking some words.’”
He added: “But that’s the thing we all signed up for. That’s the carnival, that’s the contest. I got faith in that. That’s okay.”
One of the biggest complaints from critics was the innovative filmmaking. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the movie used CGI to allow Hanks and Wright to play both the younger version and older versions of themselves.
The one-angle camera shot throughout the entirety of the movie also made the plot lackluster.
Stephen Romei of The Australian wrote: “This film is interesting to look at if you are interested in movie-making technique, but as a drama it is rather undramatic.”
Fans loved the movie. One Rotten Tomatoes, one wrote: “Watched this…..while crying and laughing through all 2 hours.. Wonderful movie about the human spirit and grieving…”
Another wrote: “Beautifully made. I laughed out loud, more then once. I smiled and I cried. A wonderful movie.”
One said: “Amazing movie. Watched in cinema 2023 loved it. Very heart warming and heart jerking at the same time.”
“I personally loved this movie, was crying my eyes out at the end. Not sure why it’s labelled as comedy though,” one fan wrote.
