Whether it’s reading to her grandson, or children in the community, books have always been a big part of Donna Brown’s life.
“My mom said I used always follow her around and ask her to read a book to me,” Donna says.
It’s no surprise that during her time working for the Springfield School District, she developed programs like “Real Men Read”.
“I found, much to my dismay, that a lot of kids can’t even have an experience because their reading skills are not up to par,” says Donna.
It’s that personal passion for reading that lead Donna to create iMagicNation, a non profit organization centered around literacy. It’s goal is to provide tutoring services and reading environments for children in Springfield. In addition to working with local schools, Donna and imagicNation have plans to build a brick and mortar tutoring center at the northeast corner of 16th and Spruce.
“This is what our organization is about,” says Donna. “It’s about sharing, reading with kids and helping them connect to books.”
It may have taken Donna decades to find her calling, but her devotion to the Springfield area is a legacy to last a lifetime.
“At 62, I feel like this is my passion,” says Donna. “This is what I’m supposed to do. This is what I was put on earth to do, to share the joy and the love and the connection of the reading that happens when you open a book.”
In addition to tutoring, the non-profit also has several Little Libraries throughout Springfield and offers free books to local school children at various events.
