Trump wins 2024 election, Republicans secure popular vote for first time in 20 years
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Former President Donald Trump has clinched the 2024 presidential election, becoming the 47th president of the United States and marking the first time a Republican has won the national popular vote in two decades.
Political analyst Jared Smith remarked on the unusual nature of Trump’s win:
“For somebody with the baggage Donald Trump has to win the popular vote, is really unprecedented,” said Smith.
Experts point to the Republican success in Congress as a sign of the nation’s political climate.
“You saw a lot of constituencies such as the Hispanic and African American community, that have a lot more traditional conservative family values,” said political analyst Tres Watson.
Smith added, “It’s the American people sending a very clear and direct message, I mean they didn’t even put guardrails in, usually you’d have a democratic house or a democratic senate to kind of grind everything down. But the American people basically said ‘we’re tired of what the democrats are selling, we don’t care who’s next to the name that has an R next to it, we’re going to put the republicans in and send a very loud and strong message.’”
Kamala Harris, who fell short in her campaign, did not outperform President Biden in any county nationwide, political analysts noted.
“As with any election, especially president, ‘it’s the economy stupid,’” said Watson. “The economy in 2008, Obama won because of the recession, in 2012 Obama won because the economy was good, 2020 Biden won because of the Covid economy, and I think this year, 2024, you’re seeing Donald Trump win,” said Watson.
Smith expressed concerns over how the election outcome may affect the international stage, particularly in Ukraine.
“I’m really worried about the international stage, if I’m in Ukraine I feel very sorry for those people Trump will probably force Ukraine to sign a peace deal that will give up a lot of their country. I don’t think he wants to lead on the world stage, I think he wants to recede from the world stage, some people may say that’s good, but the way Putin’s acting I think that’s very bad,” said Smith.
Watson also commented on Trump’s challenge to unite the country after a divisive campaign.
“Obviously it was an incredibly divisive campaign, he’s going to have to come out and prove to people that he’s going to be a president for all Americans,” said Watson.
Political analysts see the Republican shift in the Senate as an indicator of the country leaning center-right.
