Miramax and Paramount are resurrecting the Scary Movie franchise with a brand new reboot movie, with franchise originators the Wayans Brothers returning. Chatting withTV Insider this week, Scary Movie mainstay Regina Hall gives an encouraging comment that we’ll see the return of fan favorite Brenda Meeks.
Regina Hall starred alongside Anna Faris in the first four Scary Movie installments, with Faris playing Cindy Campbell and Hall playing her character’s best friend, Brenda. Faris recently commented that she doesn’t plan on returning unless Regina Hall is also asked to return. Luckily, it sounds as though talks may be underway.
“Anna is great. I’m just very excited to know that the Wayans, who actually started the project out of their idea, are back on board and at the helm again. I’m excited for them. We’ll see if Brenda is in this new world. I’m thrilled at the possibility that the band could get back together again. That would be fun,” Hall told TV Insider of her potential return.
The Scary Movie film franchise was developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. Keenen Ivory Wayans wrote and directed the first two films. Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans wrote and starred in the first two films. The first Scary Movie was released in 2000, just four years after Wes Craven reinvigorated the horror genre with his meta-slasher masterpiece, Scream. The Wayans brothers are reuniting for the first time in 18 years to write an all new, original script for the restart of the franchise.
The film parodied horror movies of the time, including Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project and the horror-comedy spoof scared up $278 million at the worldwide box office. The success of that first Scary Movie paved the way for an entire franchise of horror spoofs, five of them in total released between 2000 and 2013.
Luiz H.C. celebrated 20 years of Scary Movie right here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2020. Luiz astutely wrote, “I’m now certain that Scary Movie and its subsequent sequels are responsible for introducing thousands of non-horror fans to classic genre tropes and iconography in a “safe” comedic environment. If you think about it, this franchise probably acted as a gateway drug for some folks that had never given real scary movies a chance.”
Scary Movie is part of Paramount Pictures’ first-look deal with Miramax. Becky Sloviter is overseeing for Miramax. The Wayans brothers, alongside Rick Alvarez, will be writing and producing this film.
The new Scary Movie is expected next year for a theatrical release.
