1. Sardar Udham (2021)
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, ‘Sardar Udham’ is a biopic based on the life of Sardar Udham Singh, an Indian freedom fighter hailing from Punjab. Singh assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in London on March 13, 1940. This was Singh’s revenge for the killing of more than a thousand people (gathered for a protest) at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, by British troops on April 13, 1919. O’Dwyer was Punjab’s Lieutenant Governor at the time. Singh was subsequently arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death. He was hanged at the Pentonville Prison in north London on July 31, 1940. The compelling performance of actor Vicky Kaushal as Sardar Udham Singh won him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
