The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2024 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 20, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 21.
Next is Winter Washington, head of DEI & employee experience at Gainwell Technologies, and finalist in the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Executive of the Year, Private & Public Companies, category. Here, she talks about recent achievements, shares career advice and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024?
In 2024, membership in Gainwell’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) increased by 30%, which is a significant achievement and quite a testament to the impact of our DEI work. The leaders and members of our six ERGs are all employee volunteers who are committed to bridging company support and employee needs. During a time when many organizations have taken a step back from DEI support and employees may feel heightened sensitivity to DEI-related topics, this increase in participation validates the importance of the work we are doing at Gainwell.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
At Gainwell, we are making an intentional shift to put a stronger emphasis on connectivity and the human aspect of DEI. While numbers and metrics are key, a people-first mentality is absolutely vital for creating successful teams. During divisive times, a people-centric focus can be more effective in moving forward together in our DEI journey and celebrating the diversity that makes us stronger.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Remain focused on your values and the impact you want to make. The human resources and DEI space is continually evolving, and the wind could blow you in many directions. It’s critical to have a strong foundation, to be firmly grounded in your values, so you can remain focused on your ultimate impact. When you are confident in your core beliefs and goals, it is much easier to enlarge your sphere of inclusion to be even more effective.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know about?
Given the excitement of the recent Summer Olympics, many have found it interesting to learn that I was once a Division 1- All American gymnast, competing for Temple University.
