Tourists soaking up the sun in Spain got quite the fright after emergency alerts sent their mobile devices into a frenzy, jolting holidaymakers and expats with what was deemed a seriously startling noise. The alarming incident, spurred by the European Union safety measures, left holidaymakers “jumping out of their skin” this week.
People relaxing in Malaga were particularly petrified on Tuesday evening when their phones broke the night’s silence with a deafening din. Described as an ‘ear-splitting ring’, the noise accompanied a government message that spread across the Costa del Sol and nearby locations such as Axarquia, in light of the state’s weather agency sounding a red alert for torrential rain starting at 10am Wednesday, not letting up until the stroke of midnight, reports Birmingham Live.
Speaking to the Olive Press, one expat said: “I just got an alert on my phone, it frightened the c**p out of us! ” adding, “It flashed up like an alarm and made this horrible beeping sound that was painful to the ears.”
Another tourist told the publication: “I nearly spilled my tea all over me, the sound was like something out an apocalypse film, but it’s fair to say we are all bl***y aware now! ” The alarms buzzed post-10pm as part of Proteccion Civil’s newly minted Es-Alert system had its first run-out in Malaga, and the bilingual message took pains to reach the broad swath of English speakers in the region.
The alert, which some locals said pinged their phones as late as 11pm, warned: “Civil alert… Red warning activated (Aemet), extreme risk of rainfall… be very cautious, avoid travel and follow the advice of 112.”
