Sean Claude LeBlanc, 56, was to stand trial over three days next week on charges of stealing and defrauding The Call Guys, a Moncton-based call centre business. Instead, the file was brought to provincial court Friday and LeBlanc pleaded guilty to fraud, with the Crown intending to withdraw the theft charge at sentencing, scheduled for Jan. 22.
Prosecutor Maurice Blanchard told the court LeBlanc worked in sales at the company from 2017 to 2021 and collected funds. LeBlanc told the court he didn’t actually work as a salesperson but was vice-president and founder of the business.
Blanchard said that from 2019 to 2021, LeBlanc unlawfully directed $60,000 of the business’s money to his personal account. He said he will provide more specific details at sentencing.
New Brunswick’s Court of Appeal has ruled in the past that breaches of trust such as thefts from employers must draw jail terms to act as a deterrent to others, though offenders may avoid jail if they can prove “exceptional circumstances” were present in their situation.
