The KZN South Coast is known as one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country.
Visitors are always looking for interesting and unique experiences while on holiday, and South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) has highlighted several rural attractions.
“We want our visitors to truly embrace summer on the South Coast, and there are so many ways to do this from the coast to the hinterland. “We are continuing to develop and support our rural tourism sites and activities to increase accessibility for tourists who are looking for authentic local experiences. This also supports our upcoming rural tourism operators and increases the geographical footprint of our tourism economy,” said CEO of SCTIE, Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya.
These rural attractions include Amandawe’s Ubumbano Farm and Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre in Mtwalume.
Sisters Nelly and Nolwazi Zama co-founded Ubumbano Farm in 2017, and it has since become an ever-growing rural attraction.
Ubumbano is on a smallholding in Amandawe as a mixed farming venture. Here, they produce crops that gained local consumer attention, prompting the shift to commercial farming with the addition of a retail sector as well.
SCTIE identified the farm as an ideal addition to the Agri-CULTURE Tours, which has proved a success for tourism and this local family.
“Agritourism is an educational and fun experience for many, and the KZN South Coast is fortunate in that it is made up of a farming community, from small-scale to commercial. The area is already a worldwide tourist attraction, now with agritourism, there’s an added drawcard for tourists – a different take on the tourism sector,” said Nelly.
Nolwazi also stated that they also make products from their produce.
“The agriculture and tourism industries are very important in our communities. We now have women who farm vegetables like yams and sweet potatoes and who sell chickens to our communities and shops,” said Nolwazi.
“My advice is to start small and grow. Through tourism, you can share your experience with people.”
The farm offers guided tours where visitors can sample the home-grown macadamia nuts, bananas, spinach, sweet potatoes, mielies and green beans.
