Maisie Williams made her acting debut in Game of Thrones at just 12 years old, but some fans are now joking that she may have been around for much longer.
A photo from 1948, shared on Reddit, shows a Williams look-alike in a school year group picture from Oakland, California, with people now humorously claiming she is a ‘time traveller’.
The image, which has been circulating online, sparked the tongue-in-cheek rumours after it was found that the photo was taken nearly 50 years before the actress was born. In the photo, the doppelganger – third row down on the far right – is dressed in a patterned skirt and cardigan, striped socks, and a hair bow.
One commenter quipped: “As much as that looks like her, I have to ask, why, of all places, would she travel to Oakland in 1948? ” Another user joked, “Fourth on the left in the same row is a solid Elizabeth Moss, too! ” A third user chimed in, “Maybe Dr Who was a bit more accurate when she was on it than we thought.”
Another fan joked, “Or Arya discovered the secret to immortality and has just been changing her name over the years to prevent being caught.” “She might have been the true mind behind the Game of Thrones series, as it might have been a true story, and to prevent too much suspicion she had her (literally) oldest friend write the books,” said another.
Williams catapulted to stardom with her portrayal of Arya Stark, one of the main characters in HBO’s medieval fantasy series, Game of Thrones. Now 27, she boasts eight awards and has been shortlisted for 26 others – including Portal Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Young Actor, and Saturn Awards for Best Performance by a Young Actor in a Television Series.
This year, she graced the screen in The Luckiest Man in America, TV series The New Look and video game MultiVersus. Speculation about a Game of Thrones spin-off featuring Williams was ignited by George RR Martin.
The fantasy author detailed a recent trip to London on his blog, revealing he met with Williams over pizza and pasta. He teased that they “talked about… well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it. But it could be so much fun.”
