The Chief Justice and other Chief Judges of courts are now required to notify Judicial Service Commission (JSC) if they travel out of Malé domestically or internationally during weekends and other public holidays.
The circular issued by the commission on Wednesday details that the Constitution, Judges Act and Judges’ Code of Conduct stipulates every judge should dedicate all their time to the judicial cause. As such, judges should notify if they plan to travel out of the appointed court/jurisdiction or even abroad, the statement said.
As per the circular, the Chief Justice and Chief Judges of the High Court and lower courts as well as Chief Magistrates are required to notify JSC about their travels. Judges of the Supreme Court other than the Chief Justice are required to report their travel plans to the Chief Justice while High Court Judges have to inform the High Court’s Chief Judge of their travels.
Similarly, judges of lower courts have to inform their respective court’s Chief Judge and magistrates of judicial areas are required to inform their respective jurisdiction’s Chief Magistrate.
Last month, JSC also made it mandatory for judges to obtain permission to travel out of their assigned jurisdictions.
