In this part-scripted special, Jack Whitehall is on a mission to make it back to the UK in time for Christmas. Stranded in the US, he’s got just four days to get home to reunite with his family. So, with such a tough journey ahead of him, he enlists the help of stars including Michael Bublé and Daisy May Cooper.
“It was quite chaotic trying to get everyone involved with it,” explains Jack. “We filmed it over a year, there was a lot of me flying out to meet up with these big stars. It’s a Christmas miracle in itself that we managed to put it all together.” Jack’s trek involves some rather unconventional modes of transport, one of which proved to be pretty risky for the 36-year-old comedian.
“I nearly killed myself going down a mountain in a bobsleigh,” Jack confesses. “It was one of those rare occasions where it was considerably worse and scarier than I thought it would be. Then, we got to the bottom of it, and they went, ‘We’ve got two more runs now, we can get some extra shots,’ and I said, ‘Absolutely no way.’ So, I’m afraid I went out after a single go. That’s me retired now, off the bucket list, and never to be seen in a bobsleigh again.”
It wasn’t just Jack who thought he might meet his maker during filming, he reveals that fellow comic Tom Davis had a close call, too. “We nearly killed Tom,” reveals Jack. “He took a tumble and the minute he did it, he went, ‘I know that moment is going in the trailer.’”
In another scene, Jack tasks Daisy May Cooper with helping him get through London. “We shot that on Regent Street on a low loader during the Christmas period, which was not something I would wish upon anyone,” says Jack. “Driving along the streets, I felt like King Kong in the cage when he’s going through Manhattan. There were a lot of camera phones and people shouting things at us, that was a strange experience.”
Waiting at home for Jack this Christmas is his partner Roxy Horner and their 14-month-old daughter, Elsie. “This will be my first Christmas where Elsie is old enough to realise what’s going on,” he says. “This year and beyond it all starts to get a little bit more magical, so I’m really looking forward to spending Christmas with her and I’m looking forward to having some proper family time after a busy year.”
