Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, stars of the sensational series Outlander, have expressed their openness to a possible return for adapting the not yet published 10th and final book.
While the Starz adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels is set to wrap up with its eighth season, fans remain eager as there are currently nine books available and a concluding volume forthcoming.
The penultimate instalment on paper, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, captivated readers in 2021, though the release date for the final chapter remains under wraps.
Fans have been overjoyed as the televised tale resumed this week (November 22) with the eagerly awaited second part of season seven.
Appearing on The One Show, Heughan and Balfe were posed an enticing question from a devoted viewer about the future continuation of Outlander by host Anita Rani, who asked: “If you were asked, let’s say, five years from now, to come back and do Outlander book 10 as a movie, would you do it?”, reports the Daily Record.
To which Balfe responded with a hint of possibility: “Yeah, I mean never say never, right? I think if that was wanted we would always want to…”
Heughan echoed Balfe’s sentiment, chipping in: “If that’s what the fans want, how can we deny them? But yeah, we’ll see.”
Co-presenter Jones chimed in affirmatively: “There you are!” he said. “It’s not over until it’s over.”
There’s been no official announcement regarding the adaptation of the 10th book, and producers Maril Davis and Matthew B Roberts have indicated that season eight will conclude Claire and Jamie’s journey.
Despite this, fans remain hopeful that the series might find a way to carry on in the future.
In a conversation on The One Show, the co-stars shared details about their last scene together, which they described as “emotional”.
Heughan revealed: “A seven and a half minute scene,” adding, “Lots of dialogue. And the dialogue, as in Outlander, normally these scenes are, it was very dramatic.”
He also mentioned: “A lot of goodbyes in the scene but then it had this double meaning because we were also saying goodbye ourselves.”
While fans may be preparing to bid farewell to the much-loved show, they can take solace in knowing that the Outlander universe will expand with the forthcoming prequel spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
The new historical drama will unfold over two time periods, exploring the early lives of Claire and Jamie’s parents.
Viewers are left wondering if there will be more time-travel surprises. Stay tuned for its release next year to discover what’s in store.
Outlander season seven part two premieres on Friday, November 22, on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
