iciHaiti – Tourism : Labadee, a level 1 travel destination

Despite the dire situation in Haiti, which has been placed on Alert Level 4 (do not travel), Royal Caribbean continues to call at its private destination of Labadee in Haiti (North). The cruise line explained in a recent letter to passengers, “Kindly note that the civil unrest taking place in Port-au-Prince is 128 miles south of our private destination, Labadee. The drive, on less-than-idea road conditions, would take more than six and a half hours.”
“Port-au-Prince and populated areas of Haiti are far from Royal Caribbean’s Labadee resort. The cruise line has private security that discreetly monitors its gated complex and has resources to ensure that no bandit groups head to Labadee.
“The U.S. Embassy has recognized Labadee as a cruise-exclusive area with private security, low crime, and a place where only standard precautions are needed,” Royal Caribbean said https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43686-haiti-flash-cruises-in-haiti-message-to-american-citizens.html
This makes Labadee an Alert Level 1 ” Exercise Normal Caution” destination while many other cruise ports where Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines stop are under Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” travel advisories.
Let’s recall that Caribbean had temporarily stopped sailing to Labadee in March 2024 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42188-haiti-flash-royal-caribbean-cancels-its-stopovers-in-haiti-until-the-fall.html but started calling there again in October 2024 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43378-haiti-tourism-royal-caribbean-plans-return-to-labadee.html “We continue to monitor the situation very closely alongside local authorities and our security team… The safety of our guests remains our top priority,” Royal Caribbean’s letter states.
