Providence marks National Rural Health Day
National Rural Health Day was celebrated Thursday and offered an opportunity to highlight the invaluable efforts of rural hospitals and the critical impact they have in addressing the unique health care needs of rural communities.
“Providence St. Joseph Hospital and Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital are proud to be among the approximately five dozen rural hospitals throughout California that serve as essential community anchors for health and wellness,” a release from Providence stated. “Our hospitals are key to bridging health disparities here on the North Coast, particularly in patient populations who experience chronic illness and lower socioeconomic status.”
One of the many ways Providence is working to increase access to care is through its Family Medicine Residency Program. Since 2019, this partnership with Open Door Community Health Centers has trained physicians in rural family medicine with the goal of keeping those physicians in our community.
“Rural hospitals are the lifeblood of their communities, providing essential services and support to some of our most vulnerable populations,” said James Goldberg, the chief medical officer of Providence in Humboldt County, in a prepared statement. “Through initiatives like the Family Medicine Residency Program, we are committed to enhancing access to quality care and addressing the unique challenges faced by rural health facilities.”
The latest graduating class featured six resident graduates, four of whom are staying in Humboldt County and caring for patients at local clinics.
The Providence Family Practice at Redwood Memorial Hospital is a direct beneficiary of the program. Daniel Heyn, MD, a recent graduate, has joined the practice and has increased its capacity to accept new patients.
