Children in hospitals, emergency accommodation and Direct Provision will be gifted free books as part of a nationwide appeal this Christmas.
Kids undergoing treatment in healthcare settings in Cork and living in emergency accommodation are among the thousands of children who will share in over 2,000 books with the ‘Gift a Book’ initiative.
130 books will be provided through the West Cork Tenancy Sustainment, which provides support to families and single people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless all over Cork.
The national Children’s Books Ireland raised over €14,000 through public donations last year, and is working with community groups and charities in Cork to deliver books to children ahead of Christmas Day.
Children of all ages will receive titles including from Irish authors like The Golden Hare by Paddy Donnelly and Milly McCarthy and the Christmas Calamity by Leona Forde and Karen Harte.
Children’s Books Ireland CEO, Elaina Ryan, said: “Every child deserves the chance to become a reader and to find joy and comfort in a brilliant book. Together with our partners in charities and community groups in Cork, we can ensure that the children who need it most have a book to keep and call their own at Christmas.
“We are inundated with requests from charities across the country who want to bring the magic of Christmas to the children and families in their services. In launching this appeal, we want to help the thousands of children who still need our support.”
