(25News Now) – Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias showed how the election certification process works in Illinois.
Ahead of the official ceremony, Secretary Giannoulias explained that it includes the state’s seventeen congressional districts and two senate seats. Those votes are used to decide who Illinois believes should be President and Vice President. With Illinois being a winner-take-all state, the nineteen electoral votes will go to Vice President Kamala Harris, making her the state’s popular vote winner.
Federal law mandates all states gather electors on the same day to vote, and if they can’t, alternates need to be found. Following that vote, signed copies of certifications are sent to the President of the U.S. Senate, the Archivist of the United States, the Chief Election Officer of Illinois, and the chief judge of the court district where the meeting was held.
At the nation’s capitol, the new congress is then sworn in. Following that, a joint session is held where the votes are counted, officially announcing the country’s next President and Vice President. Giannoulias says the reason for the explanation is transparency. “This is an issue that never came up before four years ago after what happened on January Sixth. We believe in transparency. We want to educate the electorate and Illinois residents on how the process works.”
He added all aspects of elections are important, including what happens at polling places. “Volunteers and other public servants work long, stressful days to make sure that the tenets of democracy are upheld at our polling places, and that the votes are counted accurately.”
The 2024 Election Certification Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 17 in Springfield. The counting and certification of the electoral votes will happen on January 6 in Washington, D.C.
