When Upendra began shooting for his new directorial UI, he ran into an extraordinary problem. The shots he took in daylight did not come out as good as he wanted. But he soon found a solution to this issue with special effects.
Speaking to News18, Upendra explained the issue and what was done. “Usually, you shoot a sequence during the day and then convert it to a night shot in visual effects colour grading. With UI, it was the other way around. We had erected a special set and created a new world for UI, but the shots we took there in broad daylight were less than superior,” he says.
Upendra then discussed this predicament with the film’s producer and the VFX team, and asked them if there was a way around this situation. He wondered if it would make sense to shoot at night instead, and control everything with the lighting on set. “I asked if we could change the whole atmosphere after the shot and they said that could be done. Then we decided to go ahead with this idea and shot almost 80-90% of the film at night,” he adds.
The night to day conversion accounted for most of the 14,000 VFX shots in the film, which is also why the film took a lot of time in the making. The film is all set to take a massive opening, what with over 2.2 lakh and counting tickets sold for Day 1 in Karnataka. Upendra has been very guarded about revealing anything about the film prior to the release.
