North Carolina Humanities is offering a limited number of free North Carolina Reads Book Boxes to readers. We want to ensure broader access to books for groups and individuals in communities with limited resources and also increase participation in North Carolina Reads.
North Carolina Reads is North Carolina Humanities’ award-winning, virtual, statewide book club. North Carolina Reads annually features five books that explore the history and culture of North Carolina and topics including race, gender, and society.
Join the Club: Read, Attend Discussions, or Host a Program
From February to June 2025, North Carolina Humanities is hosting virtual, free, monthly book club discussions where participants will hear from book authors and topic experts. Libraries, community groups, and individuals across North Carolina are encouraged to read along with North Carolina Humanities, attend North Carolina Reads book club discussions, and host their own local book programs to further conversation, camaraderie and community.
Please note, you do not have to read the books or request a book box to participate in North Carolina Reads book club discussions.
(1) Get your books in the format you like best. We recommend checking with your local library or bookstore.
(2) To ensure broader access to materials, North Carolina Humanities provides free books to groups and individuals in communities where participation in North Carolina Reads would otherwise be limited.
Individual reader requests: If you are an individual reader and would like to request a North Carolina Reads Book Box, please fill out the Individual Book Box Request Form. Individual Book Boxes include up to 1 copy of each book, a bookmark, and more.
Group requests: If you are part of a book club via a library, museum or other community group and would like to request a North Carolina Reads Book Box, please fill out the Group Book Box Request Application. Group Book Boxes include 15 copies of each book, bookmarks, and more. To better serve our statewide groups of readers and meet their needs, we are introducing a new request application. For detailed instructions on how to use this new application, please visit our website.
(3) Read at your own pace!
(4) Join thousands of other North Carolinians at any of the five book club discussions hosted by North Carolina Humanities. Event registration details will be released in early 2025.
(5) Host your own North Carolina Reads program! Discussion guides and program planning guides will be available on our website as free downloads in early 2025
