A critically acclaimed romantic drama, nominated for four Oscars and dubbed a ‘cinematic classic’, is set to grace our screens today.
Pride and Prejudice, based on the literary masterpiece that The British Museums, Libraries, and Archives Society listed as one of 30 books every adult should read before they die, will be broadcast on BBC Two today (January 11).
The film, first released in 2005, is one among at least 17 adaptations of Jane Austen’s iconic 19th-century novel. It features Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the roles of the forthright Elizabeth Bennett and the captivating Mr Darcy.
Staying true to its original narrative, the plot follows Elizabeth as she encounters a wealthy bachelor, Mr. Darcy, whom she initially dislikes. As she uncovers more about his character, her feelings towards him change, leading to a budding romance.
However, their contrasting social statuses pose a challenge to their relationship.
Directed by Joe Wright in his feature film debut, Pride and Prejudice received widespread praise upon its release. The movie garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score, reports the Daily Record.
Despite being based on a much-loved tale, the film was released a decade after the BBC’s six-part series, widely regarded as the best screen adaptation of Austen’s novel. Nevertheless, audiences were enthralled by Wright’s lush cinematography and the stellar performances of the lead actors.
One admirer on Rotten Tomatoes exclaimed: “I’ve seen every version of Pride and Prejudice and didn’t think anything could be better than the BBC’s 1995 Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth 6-hour version. Welp, this tops that. Absolutely gorgeous, beautifully acted, and even though it was only a couple of hours long, it didn’t feel like anything vital was skipped. Just a complete stunner!”
Someone else wrote: “It’s a great movie surely one to become a cinematic classic.”
Meanwhile, on IMDB, the film has been lauded by over 77,000 viewers, earning a perfect 10/10 rating, with fans hailing it as “A timeless adaptation of a timeless Jane Austen novel.”
Detailing their thoughts further, the reviewer shared: “This adaptation is, for lack of a better word, a BRILLIANT achievement that keeps you actively involved from the first scene to the very last scene, just about consuming you with aching romance and it is sprinkled with humour and intelligence.”
Echoing similar sentiments, yet another cinema enthusiast remarked: “This quintessentially English film is utterly charming – a very traditional interpretation of Jane Austen’s 1813 novel that manages to entertain, amuse and even move.”
Pride & Prejudice airs today (January 11) on BBC Two at 6:35pm.
