A movie dubbed as ‘one of the best written sci-fi films’ from a director of a Star Wars sequel is on TV for free tonight.
Looper, originally released in 2012 and written and directed by Rian Johnson, will be broadcast on television tonight (Saturday, January 11) on the Legend channel at 9pm. This is available on Freeview channel 41, Sky 148, Virgin Media 149, and FreeSat 137.
Film fans who want to revisit the release or enjoy it for the first time will have to make sure to set a reminder for when it starts. That is because at the time of writing, the film is not available to stream anywhere. It can be rented on digital platforms like Amazon Video, Sky Store, Apple TV or YouTube but it is not included in any subscription based streamer.

The film tells the story of Joe played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is a hitman working in organised crime, who kills people sent back in time by his employers. Those like Joe who carry out this kind of work are referred to as Loopers. However, for one job, his own future self appears in front of him for assassination, with his older self played by Bruce Willis. Older Joe manages to escape and the younger killer has to chase himself in a race to save their present and possible future.
Other notable stars in the cast include Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels and Emily Blunt. Looper was filmmaker Rian Johnson’s third feature film release following Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He would follow up the sci-fi hit by being hired to helm the second of the Star Wars sequel trilogy in The Last Jedi and the murder mystery Knives Out. However, many fans still remember Looper fondly.
Hailing the achievement in its genre and concept, one fan said: “One of the best sci-fi movies in years. A must-see for any fan of time-travel or Bruce Willis.” While another added: “One of the best written and executed time travel films that feels easy to follow along while still being creative and interesting. A movie of this quality and is hard to find with so many bad time travel movies.”

Other fans praised the standout performances of Willis and Gordon-Levitt who effectively play the same character at different points of his life. Memorably, the film chose to put Gordon-Levitt in prosthetics so he resembled the Die Hard star more closely. One viewer commented: “One of the best Bruce Willis Action thrillers/ Scify adventure. Requires attention but once you follow it it delivers a fun ride.”
Another suggested: “This film is really good. The time travel looper concept is interesting and a cool idea. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a great job at capturing Bruce Willis’s likeness and mannerisms.”
Looper is on Legend at 9pm on Saturday, January 11.
