SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A “mostly assembled” rifle was seized from an Australian tourist at City Creek Center.
Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department responded to the mall at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of a “disturbance at a coffee shop.”
A 33-year-old man, only identified as an Australian tourist, had reportedly made a statement that caused an employee to be concerned for the safety of another person.
The employee told police she saw what appeared to be components of a firearm in the man’s backpack.
Officers worked with City Creek Center public safety officials to find and detain the man.
They found a “mostly assembled” rifle in his backpack, however, officers said there was no evidence to suggest he fully assembled the gun.
Officers are in contact with the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to determine the next stage of their investigation.
The police department said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
