GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A lot of people dream of turning their favorite hobby into a full-time job. For Trevor and Rilla Glauser, it took them ten years, but their passion allowed them to open Culture Clash Greek Yogurt in Gilbert.
It’s a Greek yogurt bar offering a dozen handmade flavors plus toppings like fresh fruit curd and granola. They also offer acai bowls and other locally sourced products in their store, like milk, cheese, honey, and seasonings.
Trevor’s love of yogurt started at a young age. He credits his family travels for introducing him to yogurt abroad, particularly in Europe.
His mom then found a yogurt maker at a garage sale and brought it home when he was 13 years old. His love of yogurt-making blossomed.
Years later, he met Rilla, who was also a big fan of yogurt, and the idea of the business came to fruition.
“During my pregnancy, all I wanted was yogurt and fruit. So, we started making it a home and we lived in downtown Phoenix at the time, and we sold our house to move east,” Rilla Glauser says.
She says the yogurt shop was something Arizona didn’t already offer. Plus, they already had all the necessary equipment to make it work.
This isn’t just any yogurt you can find in the grocery store. The Glausers use local pasteurized cow’s milk, pasteurize it again, and handmake all their flavors into a thick, custard-like product.
Trevor Glauser says Greek-style yogurt was always his favorite. The process includes “hand-straining and putting it in a bag and straining the whey out of it to make a thicker consistency.”
The shop offers a dozen flavors weekly and rotates in new flavors depending on the season.
Some flavors include blueberry lemon, pineapple with orange and guava, and honey date. One of their top sellers is the espresso custard creme brûlée.
Customers can mix and match as much yogurt and toppings as they can into the cup. The cup size at checkout determines the price, ranging from $6 to $14.25.
Trevor Glauser says, “A lot of people come in and don’t realize that it’s not another frozen yogurt shop and everything is fresh, and they once they try it, they’re kind of hooked.”
Culture Clash Greek Yogurt has been open for five years near Ray Road and Val Vista Drive. But they’re perhaps most known for attending four farmers markets every weekend: Uptown Phoenix, Downtown Phoenix, Old Town Scottsdale, and Gilbert.
Trevor and Rilla say that the farmer’s markets have really helped their business grow. It’s also allowed them to meet many like-minded small business owners whose products the Glausers offer in their brick-and-mortar shop.
Trevor says they like supporting other small businesses: “We do carry raw milk from a great family down in, by Willcox, Arizona. We have fresh eggs. We carry pickles from another, Heartquist family, that is good friends of ours.”
Rilla added, “We’d like to be a place in Gilbert where if the farmer’s market’s not going on, Culture Clash might have it too.”
Raw milk is very popular, as is bread from a local sourdough vendor, which comes out every Wednesday and is sold out every Wednesday.
Culture Clash is truly a family business. Rilla helps Trevor run it and test new flavors. Their son loves to eat the yogurt, especially the blueberry lemon, and Trevor’s parents helped hand paint the design on the shop’s floor. Trevor’s mom also helped come up with the name: Culture Clash.
Rilla Glauser says, “We have been so lucky to be embraced by the community and we want to be a part of that moving forward.”
The Glausers are always working on new items to offer at the shop. They’ll soon start making yogurt popsicles and are experimenting with yogurt bread and probiotic soda. The goal is to use the waste ingredients, like whey, that come from the yogurt-making process.
