Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are poised to revolutionise tourism in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, a region celebrated for its eco-tourism and experiential travel opportunities, according to industry experts.
The Mekong Delta, with its expansive waterways, lush greenery, and cultural richness, offers boundless possibilities for visitors. The strategic application of technology in this region aims to bridge tradition and innovation, creating a seamless blend of heritage and modern tourism experiences.
The Mekong Delta boasts vibrant orchards, a 28,000-kilometre canal network, mangrove forests, wetlands, historical relics, and cultural heritage. These attractions define its charm, offering authentic natural beauty and picturesque landscapes. With a focus on cultural preservation and economic growth, the region is leveraging immersive technologies to connect its attractions with a global audience.
Experts believe digitising destinations with VR and AR can offer immersive experiences. For example, VR can recreate the iconic Cai Rang floating market, allowing users to explore its activities virtually. This not only lets potential visitors preview the market’s unique atmosphere but also shares the Delta’s cultural story with those unable to visit.
Virtual exploration through VR and AR allows tourists to preview destinations, enriching their travel experiences. Vu Tuan Viet, Director of Vietnam Virtual Reality Technology Development JSC, highlights these tools’ transformative power in creating engaging, educational, and accessible tourism products. They capture a location’s essence, increasing the chances of in-person visits.
Beyond enriching travel, the adoption of these technologies supports the digital economy and enhances the competitiveness of the Mekong Delta, both nationally and internationally. The integration of smart technologies not only elevates the region’s tourism offerings but also stimulates investment and collaboration across various sectors. This synergy positions the Delta as a key player in Vietnam’s broader push for digital transformation, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth.
Local authorities are promoting smart tourism by using information technology, including smart tourism portals, digitised marketing, and AI-driven apps integrating 3D and VR. These efforts aim to enhance access and offer unique experiences. The shift towards smart tourism reflects the growing demand for innovative, personalised travel, with businesses and government agencies collaborating on strategies that meet regional needs while aligning with global trends.
The Department of Science and Technology in Can Tho has launched the “Can Tho Tourism” app and portal, providing easy access to information on accommodations, attractions, cuisine, and events. Plans to digitise destinations and cultural activities, including 3D representations of major sites, aim to broaden the Delta’s reach and encourage repeat visits.
Despite the promising potential, obstacles remain. Tran Huu Hiep, Vice President of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association, highlighted challenges such as insufficient technological infrastructure, a lack of skilled professionals, and limited support policies and incentives. He noted that these barriers, if left unaddressed, could hinder the region’s progress and undermine its aspirations to become a leading smart tourism destination. Addressing these challenges requires a collaborative approach, leveraging expertise from both local and international stakeholders.
He recommended integrating VR and AR into education and tourism, building strong infrastructure, advancing digital transformation, and improving regional connectivity. These actions would enhance tourism management, foster innovation, and increase sector creativity. It’s also crucial to involve local communities in the process, ensuring the authenticity, sustainability, and long-term success of tourism initiatives.
Applying VR and AR in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta aligns with global trends, enhancing the region’s international connectivity. These efforts position the Delta as a leading smart tourism destination, showcasing its unique heritage. Embracing technology ensures a better visitor experience while preserving the region’s treasures for future generations. By integrating these innovations, the Delta can attract more global visitors, fostering sustainable growth and cultural exchange.
