ARKANSAS TIMES FILM SERIES:
‘WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN’
TUESDAY 1/21. Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema. 7 p.m. $12-$14.
In Pedro Almodóvar’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” Pepa (Carmen Maura) and Iván are voice actors and lovers. Iván leaves her without warning and Pepa, having a very important message to deliver, tries to reach him by phone but only gets his answering machine. What ensues is a madcap plot involving telephones, spiked gazpacho, a complex web of relationships and a young Antonio Banderas. “Women on the Verge” pays homage to Almodóvar’s classical Hollywood influences, particularly in tone. It’s easy to see his admiration for directors like Howard Hawks (“His Girl Friday”) and Billy Wilder (“Some Like It Hot”). The 1988 movie was a breakthrough success, becoming — at the time of its release — the highest-grossing Spanish film of all time and scoring both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign Language Film.
