Joe Hamilton knows a love for reading starts early. “Showing them the fun of it and having them appreciate how much enjoyment they can get – is what’ll keep them as lifelong readers,” Hamilton said. He’s a teacher at Deer Pointe Elementary School in Fremont, Nebraska and the January winner of KETV’s Cash in for Schools grant, sponsored by Thrasher Foundation Repair. “I think it’s great to see the community and family get involved,” he said. “The more involvement we have, the better it is for students.”Hamilton was inspired to apply for the $2,500 check by PTA president and the parent of one of his students, Mary Dominguez. “I know a lot of teachers who could use this money, and it could go a long way,” Dominguez said. Dominguez’s daughter is in Hamilton’s afterschool book club, which has tripled in size since it started a few years ago – now at about 40 students. On Jan. 14, KETV and Thrasher Foundation Repair dropped by to present the oversized check to Hamilton and his students. At least $500 will go for new books for students in the book club. The other money will go toward a book vending machine. “The more kids enjoy reading, the more they’ll do it in the future,” Hamilton said. The vending machine, which will likely use tokens, will be used for birthdays, good behavior, and good grades. The books will be free for the students.”With public schools, there’s always a need — whether it’s books or money for activities — so every little bit helps,” Dominguez said. “We’re so thankful that we were given this opportunity, and we’ll use this money as best we can.”We’re still looking for more applications as we pick our second semester winners in the Cash in for Schools grant program.
